NAICOMP BUYING GUIDE
New or refurbished? Make the right call.
Both can be a sensible choice. What matters is the actual computer, its condition and the support that comes with it.
The short answer
Choose between new and refurbished by comparing the exact specification, physical condition, battery health and written warranty. A refurbished business laptop can suit a smaller budget; a new device may offer a newer platform. The condition of the individual unit matters more than the label.
- Ask for actual unit photos and a battery report.
- Test the screen, keyboard, ports, webcam and charger.
- Confirm operating-system support and warranty before paying.

Start with your budget and your needs
A refurbished business laptop can put a better keyboard, sturdier construction and useful ports within a smaller budget. A new laptop can offer a more recent platform and clearer manufacturer support. Compare the complete configuration, not just the brand or a Core i5 label.
Know what “refurbished” actually means
Refurbished is not a universal quality grade. Sellers may have different testing processes and cosmetic standards. Ex-UK describes the claimed source of a device; it is not a guarantee of its condition or how it was repaired.
Your inspection checklist
- Ask for actual unit photos, including the screen, hinges, keyboard and corners.
- Check the battery health report and ask how long it lasts under a realistic workload.
- Test Wi-Fi, the webcam, microphone, speakers and each connection you need.
- Inspect the screen for dead pixels, pressure marks and uneven backlighting.
- Confirm the charger specification and whether it is included.
- Get the warranty period, exclusions and return procedure in writing.
Check software support before paying
Check the exact processor and hardware against the operating system's current requirements. A seller installing an operating system does not, by itself, prove official support or a genuine licence. For specialist courses or work, ask the software provider for its hardware requirements.
When new makes sense
New can be the better choice when you need a specific current platform, a predictable warranty route or several identical machines for a business. Ask who fulfils the warranty in Kenya and whether the quoted amount includes tax and the accessories you need.
