Buying guide / Refurbished explained

A practical inspection for a refurbished laptop

Check the screen, battery, ports, software support and written terms on the actual used laptop you are buying.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Inspect the actual unit and test the tasks you need. A refurbished label or an ex-UK description does not tell you its battery condition, repair history, software eligibility or warranty.

Before a demonstration

Request clear photos of the screen, keyboard, hinges, corners and bottom label. Ask what was tested, what was repaired or replaced, and whether any faults remain. Cosmetic grades vary between sellers; ask for a description of the actual marks instead of relying on a letter grade.

Have the exact processor, memory and storage shown in the computer's system information. Compare these with the quote. If you need an upgrade, confirm compatibility, the finished configuration and the final amount before authorising it.

A ten-minute functional check

  • Open a plain light and dark image. Look for screen damage, distracting bright spots and flicker.
  • Type a sentence using every important key. Test the touchpad, buttons and keyboard backlight if advertised.
  • Join Wi-Fi, open a video call preview, and check the webcam, microphone and speakers.
  • Test the USB ports, headphone jack and display connection you intend to use.
  • Open and close the lid gently. Check for loose hinges or a charger socket that cuts out.
  • Run a normal task on battery power and watch for sudden shutdowns, excessive noise or charging interruptions.

Battery health and runtime answer different questions

Ask for the battery health information available for that model and the date it was checked. A capacity estimate gives context; runtime also depends on brightness, calls, apps and power settings. A short unplugged demonstration cannot establish all-day battery life.

Ask whether the battery has been replaced, whether it is covered by the seller's warranty, and the cost and availability of a suitable replacement. Do not accept a visibly swollen case or battery as normal wear; have the unit assessed before use.

Verify operating-system support

An installed copy of Windows 11 does not establish that the hardware is officially supported. Microsoft lists requirements including a compatible processor, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot capability. Ask the seller to demonstrate eligibility on the actual machine using the manufacturer's information and Microsoft's compatibility tools.

Also confirm the software licence and that the device can be set up for your own account. Ask the seller to resolve any previous organisation's management, firmware password or ownership lock before you take the computer.

Agree on the handover and support route

Get the agreed condition, included accessories, warranty and return procedure in writing. Confirm whom to contact if a fault appears, who transports the machine, and how your files will be handled during repairs. Keep a backup from the first day.

Choose a new device when predictable battery condition, a required current platform or a specific manufacturer support package matters more than the lower purchase price. Compare the actual offers: new and refurbished listings can have different support arrangements.
